There have been some issues with migration of radio tags out of animals or premature failure. Also radio telemetry or GPS based (mostly somewhat large devices attached via collars - have been used with frogs though), data logger and transmitter, transmitter and study animal size and $$$ will determine which is most likely to work. These animals can travel quite a distance, so radio tracking can pose serious issues as well. Releasing a number into the countryside could present quite a headache considering the potential for failure of one or more of these devices and the inability to recover the animal(s). A small study in a controlled environment is probably a good first step. Attempting to test too many hypotheses at once can muddle the findings.
There were radiotracking studies done in the Glades, as there was an existing population of Burmese pythons there, the introduction of Burmese pythons into new areas without well-defined boundaries would pose an issue which might not pass muster with researchers, the media or locals.
Basing opinions on news reports (which are misleading at best) of scientific studies, can lead to a lot of misplaced ire.
There are some waterproof, implantable gps locaters about the size of a 9 volt battery (This was considered a nano- device?)and some smaller. The smaller the more $$$.

It seems they are using implantable radio transmitters, and data loggers to monitor internal temperature hourly. Trying to obtain some data concerning thermoregulation in the more northerly climate.
