One of my hobbies is photography, and I especially enjoy photographing herps and inverts, and one of the places that I upload pics is to my account on Deviantart.com, which in spite of the name, is supposed to have rather strict rules in place as to what can and cannot be posted, and normally they follow through with complaints about content of a picture or photo or literary piece.
Sometimes, though, photos get past them. Here's a good case-in-point: the photographer has impaled a young Rat Snake through its head and neck with a sharp stick, and photographed its death agonies. He/she and his/her friends obviously find this image amusing, as indicated by the title and their comments. Now, when it comes to something like this, I don't even try to be diplomatic. I don't pull punches. Check out this image and see if you find it amusing, as well: http;//charmander36.deviantart.com/art/O-Hai-Thar-3-129288101 . Do you think it's acceptible to show this, on a site that supposedly has rules against posting real depictions of animal cruelty, as long as the animal in question is not furry? Should we all just brush it off as a case of, "oh, well...that's just how people treat reptiles"?

Looks like they have already taken it down! Hope they banned that person.

I'm glad they took it down (good on ya for calling someone's attention to it). Just your description turned my stomach with anger. Respect for life is respect for life. Period. I have no problems with people killing with reason (the only two of which I can think of right now are food and protection), but killing ANYTHING for the purpose of entertainment is an indication of a truly sick individual. I am an avid hunter. I like being out in nature, I like eating venison, and I really don't mind the cleaning. The only part that I really don't enjoy is actually taking the animal's life. I just recognize it as part of the process. Unless you're vegan (or a primary producer) something has to die for you to eat.

It has been taken down, and the "artist" was sternly warned, especially since in her comments to MINE, she was extremely nasty. This isn't the first time someone has posted such a pic; last year a guy rammed a huge Rambo knife down the throat of a Yellow-Bellied Water Snake, and photographed its death throes. He SWORE it was a "Water Mocassin"(how many of y'all would like to have just one dime for every Nerodia you've heard called a "Water Mocassin" or "Cottonmouth" or "Copperhead" or "Water Rattler? I know I'd be richer than the CEO of Exxon.) and that it was "going after" his kid brother, so he had to pick it up and ram a knife down its throat to save his little bro', and of course, had to take pictures and brag about what a brave, tough person he was.
I'm a hunter, too, and many of the people I know hunt. None of us enjoys the killing part, and certainly none of us enjoys seeing anything suffer. We don't hunt animals because we hate them, though. Few people can see as much beauty in a deer as a deer hunter. I've known avid hunters to risk their own lives to save a doe trapped in quick-mud, or a buck hopelessly tangled up in Kudzu vine, and release them, even though in the case of the buck, an impressive 8-pointer, it was deer season and the guys were out hunting! How easy would it have been to simply shoot that deer there on the spot, or slit his throat as he was tangled, and call it a day? Instead, they had the respect for that animal to free it and release it; perhaps they would meet again, and this time the deer would fall, but at least it would be on different terms. That's the difference between someone who takes a life that they RESPECT, and someone who kills out of hate.

I saw the picture before it was taken down and your (Pitbulllady) comments. Job well done. Maybe the picture should still be there just so others could read your comments. That was the educational part.
