If you glance at my profile, you'll see that I'm writing a sort of travel-essay type piece on snakes, intended for a general audience. Well, many, many people in the general audience positively loathe snakes. I'm trying to fashion the piece such that it makes a convert or two. One of my strategies has been to show how terrorized/abused snakes are by US, by humans. I'm putting together a compendium of horror stories, hoping that it'll evoke a bit of empathy in readers otherwise averse to *scary, icky, evil* snakes. I'm looking for things like botched fang removal in India, performers in North Africa who forcibly augment horns in desert adders, rattlesnake roundups or those people who torture/mutilate snakes for sheer delight (as noted in the recent post from Pitbulllady).
I know this is stomach-churning stuff. But I'm hoping that in recounting it I can invoke a little humility in people who might otherwise turn a blind eye/look at snakes--and not us--as the aggressor. Any anecdotes to this end would be greatly appreciated. If you've got stuff you'd rather not post, feel free to email me directly. Thank you.
