There are many people with an interest who would have never thought of the precautions codified by the law. Whether those people should own any of the covered animals is not important and whether they have other methods of gaining knowledge is irrelevant; what is important is that the law provides them with some guidelines for safely keeping what are inherently dangerous animals (I'll get flamed for saying that, but if an animal has a reasonable chance of causing serious injury or death through it's normal behavior, I'd have to call it inherently dangerous.).
Additionally, part of the reason for having laws is so that we can sanction the bad people when we catch them. If someone would ignore this law, is it any more reasonable to expect that person to obey any other laws, say drunk driving laws? Is it really rational to say that we should just allow such individuals to act in any manner they see fit without the risk of sanction (e.g. jail or fines)? Laws provide those individuals an opportunity to obey the law and provide society the ability to sanction those individuals who choose to ignore the law and are caught doing so. Properly handled, sanctioning Offender A will often discourage someone else who is on the fence regarding the law. Often Offender B will never become an offender because he/she will decide the sanctioning cost is too high and obey the law because it is in his/her self-interest. Whether B is "good" or "bad" is irrelevant, it is the simple economics of self-interest that drive the decision.
If you disagree with the law on principle, fine, but the good/bad argument is really a straw man that does nothing towards logically defending any position.

According to Charlie and I agree to a point .Large dogs horses cattel pigs/swine sting rays lion fish stone fish rock fish and a few others. The keeping of bees should be included. Some of these cause dozens of more deaths to people a year than a snake does yet they were not cursed to crawl upon there belly for all time so we will not include these animals they are acceptable .They are going after snakes simply because they are snakes not for any damage they have done it is simple biblical agenda to rid the earth of serpents and all who keep them now flame me I can take it.

As a church going person I have dealt with more boneheaded preachers, deacons, and perisioners than you can shake a snake hook at.
I always ask them to show me in scripture, where does it say "all" snakes/serpents are cursed? They can't do it, and it pisses them off. Sure satan or whoever may have been cursed to crawl around like a snake, but the snakes themselves are not cursed. Think of it this way......God made us to function with legs and arms....take that away from us and then tell us to eat off the floor we would be screwed. God made snakes to function without limbs.
A couple of years ago I actually took my preacher to a reptile show. He was humbled real fast as soon as he got in door. He realized that 98% of the folks there were normal looking and weren't dressed like some goth looking freak or whatever. His stereotyping ended.
A few weeks after that one of the deacons showed up on my door step wanting to chit chat and see my snakes. While giving him the nickel tour he saw a medical paper in the snake room. The article was about some venom research being done to help fight or cure ALS (lou gerrigs disease) or something to that effect. That tiny paper almost melted the guy into tears.....his wife died years ago from ALS. He soon understood that God made these animals for a reason, and its our job with his guidence hopefully, to figure out what to do in a positive way with these creatures.
Sometimes folks if you can find away to relate these creatures to the folks who want to ban them can go along way.

I understand pictigaster1. I wasnt trying to slam your comment or anything. Just sharing one of my experiences about the church crowd. I also deal with some nuts in the church that can't be reasoned with no matter what.

In reference to my "...inherently dangerous..." statement:
I was not intending to imply that any group of animals should or should not be included. Nor was I intending to comment directly on whether the law itself is reasonable.
I intended to point out only that the law provides some guidelines for providing a measure of safety for keeping some specific animals which are easily capable of causig injury or death if handled improperly.
Whether it was fair/reasonable to select the specific animals chosen will long be a matter for debate (one for which I have insufficient knowledge to properly debate)

Charlie and Atwageman I liked both of your comments and was not disagreeing sometimes I do not articulate well. This idea of this hobby becoming illegal is almost more than I can handle. While all the kids were playing and haveing fun I was catching snakes .I did not relate well with most people growing up.This is the one thing I did to stay sane .For 42 years this is what I have done. This is not a new hobby to me.This defines my life and always has, this deligates my vacations my honeymoon and all my free time I can not under stand the insanity that has overcome the nation. If a law helps keep this hobby alive I support IT 100%

I can fully understand pictigater where youre coming from on not relating well to people, especially as a child. I too was one those kids that was out chasing snakes, insects, etc. And the best part is my parents let me do it (be myself). Many kids I grew up with were forced to play all kinds of sports, blah blah blah because that's what all the other soccer moms and dads were doing too. My parents are not reptile people at all, but they were smart enough to see that I had some sort of God given talent concerning reptiles and insects...and let me run with it. As an adult I believe thats why to this day I'm a happy person, I was not pressured the first 18 years of my life to be something I didn't want to be.
I believe todays kids are born with some sort of natural talent like we were, but that hidden talent gets trampled on by parents who have lost the meaning of being competitive. Also remember when we played sports, only the top 2 or 3 teams got a trophy, now everybody gets a trophy in the name of self-esteem. Also back in the day we had secretaries not admin assistants.....both jobs are identical, but the admin title is supposed to make one feel better and more important.
I could rant all day.................
