Most permits/liscences are a matter of public record. Most people would be surprised what information about themselves is available for the asking. I can jump on my computer right now and find out if my neighbors paid their property taxes, how much they paid for their house, how long they have been married (if they are married), and even the basic layout of their house. So this is likely not a matter of illegal release of information. It is more likely a case of media sensationalism overiding basic professionalism.
