Jackie, usually that is the case.
From time to time here, we learn of animals that die for no known reason, and the only thing new is the substrate that someone bought at a landscape store.
I do not know just what the regulations are concerning fumigation of products like that when they are transported from one state to another, however, it is something to be a bit cautious about.
Considering the pet store products cost 10 to 20 times as much, it is very tempting to use the landscape grade materials.
I sure do with my animals, and have not run into any problems so far.

I've started using cypress mulch from lowes when I discovered my wife was buying the stuff for her garden at less than $3.00 for a huge bag. After I put the substrate in the cage I hit it with provent a mite or lice spray then put the snake in.
So far no issues.

Cypress is what I use, I have tried others with poor results. I did find pine bark in the cypress mulch from Lowes so I'm guessing it is mixed and not pure Cypress.
It still works for me.
