Rob, maybe this will help.
I always wanted to go to Germany and thought, why not knock out 2 birds with one stone. It was a mini vacation to a place I always wanted to visit and also got to check out one of the best reptile shows in the world. When it comes to what I got, honestly I had no clue what I would find just as I don't know what SC or SA will have this year. I guess if I knew what Hamm would have and I went just for a "few rattle snakes" I could get in my back yard it would seem strange, I guess. From what people told me, each year HAMM has different snakes and actually lined up a few things for next year. I guess it's like snake hunting Rob, finding 1 snake is better than finding no snakes, you know? I guess kind of pricy for just a reptile expo but as I said, vacation all-N-one. (Went to the Netherlands and Belgium today, I'm taking full advantage of my snake expo/vacation. ;-)
I'm sure it's not perfect here but it is a different society, one that I'm not use to. I'm not saying it's that way all over Germany, just in Munster and Hamm where I spent most my time.

Thanks Archie, you've always been real helpful. I'll let you know in the coming weeks.
BTW, Some of you may not know this but Germany does not allow anyone to sell pinkies (Live) without their mother. You can buy frozen I was told but if you want live pinks, they are hard to come by unless you raise your own or buy the group. Just some useless info none of us will ever be worried about but thought I would let your brains spin on that one.
Also with so many people at the show it gets very HOT inside! It was cool outside but with so many people...

I've witnessed the Snake show in Holland and can't say enough about what a pleasureable (& eye opening) experience it was. Unfortunately, it does take the blanket off when it comes to revealing Euro/American differences in defining words like "freedom & democracy". The "I know better than you" attititude is catching on and I believe that show is now non-venomous. LEGAL alcohol, weed, mushrooms, & hookers but no HOTS - LOL.?!? One can only understood through experience but the adventure is similar to the storyline in The Matrix, once you've been through it, you can't go back to "not knowing" what other people know. I'm glad you enjoyed some of what the rest of the world has to offer. I do understand what you mean. After an eye opener like that, self reflection (even if viewed as a nation of people), can lead to happier, more fulfilling life. Fear is a means of control. I got to walk the streets of the redlight district alone from 12 - 4 a.m. before we left. I've had more problems walking the streets of NYC, regardless of the hour. The accomodations were not luxurious but I didn't go there to sit in my room. The snake show was great!! I was intrigued by the detailed care vendors put into displays and table appearance. No ten gallons with half dead emaciated, dehydrated crap piled on top of each other I've witnessed too many times over the years. I was particularly taken by the C.b.b. Common Boas & Carpet Pythons as they looked "unrelated/different" than what we typically have available in the states. This is poss. a result of selective breeding or stock descending from different pockets or locales w/in a subspecies. I imagine the same differences applied to other genus species I was/am somewhat unfamiliar with to have realized the difference - including Rattlesnakes. In other words, they could be breeding Canebrakes from a small pocket (locale) & after years (poss. decades) of breeding, their offspring may look much different than anything we come across C.b.b. or W.C. in the States. The coolest thing I saw was a breeding group of San Francisco Garter Snakes. I don't keep Garters but WOW!!

I guess I'm a little late on this one but not everyone is as lucky as you. I can't help but think, when you want a snake it probably just lands in your lap for the most part (You have better connectons I would guess, founder of the wildlife discovery center). I guess leaving your house to visit any reptile show for a snake is strange lol. I know it took you years and alot of hard work and I respect that, thanks for educating the world. I hope one day I can check out your center.
