ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - On Friday, Florida Fish and Wildlife officers removed an 18-foot python from a home in Apopka.
This event, among other snake incidents in Florida prompted Senator Bill Nelson to propose a ban on owning big snakes. He says that snakes of any sizes can be a concern.
Senator Nelson is co-sponsoring a bill that would ban the importation and interstate trade of pythons. Currently, Florida requires python owners to have permits. Senator Nelson says the bill would also classify pythons as injurious animals.
In February, he filed the legislation to ban the importation of Burmese pythons. Nelson says owners abandon their python pets in the Everglades, which now host 100,000 pythons. The death of a Sumter County two-year-old girl also contributed to Senator Nelsons cause.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse but if a "Big Snake" is a concern, what do you think is next on that "Concern" list of snakes to ban.

Well, one would have to assume that the 18-foot python that was removed from a home in Apopka was another illegal snake, where the owners did not have a permit to keep it.
All the good work that USARK did trying to modify the python bill could go down the drain, because some of you folks in Florida just can not follow the rules about keeping large constrictors !
Seems like this 18 foot snake has got this Senator Nelson re energized about a ban.
Those of you in Florida who are keeping large constrictors legally should pay a visit to the the folks in Apopka who had their snake taken up, so that you can thank them personally for how much they have just helped you keep your rights for legal large constrictor keeping.
Best Regards

The way the Florida Law is written, there is no Grandfathering of pre-act pythons.
Rules for Reptiles of Concern (ROCs) go into effect on January 1, 2008. ROCs require a $100 annual permit for personal possession, and any ROC that is 2 inches or greater in diameter must be permanently identified by a microchip (also called a PIT tag). Microchips can be implanted by local veterinarians who work with nonnative species. Any person who possesses an ROC that is 2 inches or greater in diameter before January 1, 2008 will have until July 1, 2008 to get their animal microchipped. Any ROC greater than 2 inches in diameter purchased after January 1, 2008 will need to be microchipped immediately. The following are the Reptiles of Concern:
1. Burmese python (Python molurus)
2. African rock python (Python sebae)
3. Amethystine python (Morelia amethystinus)
4. Reticulated python (Python reticulatus)
5. Green anaconda (Eunectes murinus)
6. Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus)
For what it is worth, the game and fish folks only gave people 6 months to do this.
I wonder though, just how many people in Florida were even aware of the new law ? How well were the new rules publicised ? Was every family in Florida mailed the new rules, just in case they owned a large constrictor or pet monitor lizard ? Were the rules broadcast on TV infomercials ?
Most likely, the folks did not want to spend the $100 a year on a permit, or, pay the cost to have the snake pit tagged.
In doing so, they gave that Senator more ammunition in his war against large snakes.
Best Regards

They really should worry about other things like armor pissing rifles , drugs being smuggled ,illegal imigrants , and ect . But lets just go after snakes , besides it will give them something else to sell a huntimg license or ownership license . The goverment only worries about what they can regulate . $$$$$$$$ makes this country go around $$$$$$$$
