Tristin,
I'm not as familiar with these because they're not native to the SE US, but if memory serves these are South American Pit vipers. I also seem to remember that they're in the Genus Bothrops (with the lanceheads and Jaracaras)

Venomous, member of Bothrops Genus. Very dangerous snake. Here is a quick link to venom/bite information.

Are you sure you read this in a book and not on the internet?
The reason I ask is that I did a little searching to see if I could find anything similar and ran across several web pages that say things like "the Urutu is a just a Constrictor" or "an Urutu is like a constrictor".
It took a little reading to figure out that the Urutu and the Constrictor are the names of ships in a video game...
The only other thing I can think of is that there are several snakes with similar names, or it could just have been a mistake (books do have mistakes sometimes, and novels often say things about snakes that are just made up for the story).
If it was a book and you know which one, we'd like to know the name so we can check it out...

Well, I'm not sure how much I would trust a book with "yucky reptile" in the title. :). One other possibility that I can think of is that 'urutu' might be a common name for more than one snake (much like 'copperhead' describes VERY different snakes in the US and Australia).

Hi Al. I watch alot of your videos on you tube. A snake that i'd like to see if you have it on a video is a golden lancehead. I could not stand having one of those bad@#%$! in my house! I mean have you seen a bite from those things? If you want to see one i'll happily change that to my profile picture! And there color completly warns that the thing can kill like a nile croc! Also i'm going on vacation for 1 week to mexico and i'd like to know what reptiles to look out for. Please respond to this as soon as you can.
