I did not know about this until I stumbled across it online. The swamps of the south are being clearcut to make cypress much. I think that maybe we should start switching to other substrates like eco earth or peat moss. here is a link to a website dedicated to this issue:

Personally I don't have a problem with cultivating a renewable resource.The problem comes from cultivating and then turning it into a subdivision or shopping mall. A lot of forestland here in GA is used primarily for trees. They grow, they harvest, and they regrow. And the land is usually leased out to hunting clubs in the in between time. Marty

And don't forget the Solar City they want to build in Florida from the ground up! So we are going to save the enverment by building new cities from the ground up...? I understand, but on the other hand I don't!

for the most part, cypress tress are not regrown because they take so long to mature, pine trees are fine but not the cypress.

I've noticed here in Jacksonville, Florida the city and all are planting more cypress trees around town over the past 5 years or so. You see more and more planted around lakes, interstates, housing developments and business. However, as you stated I don't see Cypress farms (so to speak) as I do Pine trees.
