Just to elaborate on Grey Doss' earlier post, I had some success recently in the Mark Twain National Forest. It was a 3 day camping herp trip, and I found 3 different species of snakes, along with a cool Prarie Racerunner Lizard. I was hiking a powerline when I found an adult blue racer. It gave itself away by rattling its' tale. At first sound, I honestly thought I was going to look over at a timber rattlesnake. Anyway, I dove for it, and in usual racer fashion he thrashed about a lot, but never bit me. I took him back to camp to show the guys, and then released him where I found him. The second species was a juvenile Southern Copperhead, I found this one while night cruising on a warm night. He was very quiet and passive, just the way I find most copperheads to act,(although not all). The third species was a Prarie Ringneck Snake. I almost can't count that though, because they are a dime a dozen, but it's always still exciting to find one. I found the 8 inch Prarie Racerunner in a cedar glade littered with large flat rocks every 3 feet. Reptile heaven! Darn those things are hard to catch! I'll tell ya, snakes I can handle, but lizards and frogs always seem to get the best of me. Anyway, just wanted to share my herp trip with everyone, might go again next week. Anthony--MO

2 weeks ago I found what I think is an Axanthic molossus on River Road, just west of Lajitas. Anyone who can say exactly what color phase this snake is please email me. Last year I found a coachwhip with it's head stuck in a Budweiser can on Hwy 90 between Sanderson and Marathon. I was also ecstatic when I found a beautiful light Blair's phase alterna on 277. You can see all photos on my website at www.radioactivereptiles.com.
