Anyone done much herping at night in the tropics? I'm looking for a recommendation for a headlamp for crowded jungles, be it a model you like or even just a lumen count...
Thanks! Adam

I've never herped in the tropics, and I don't have a particular model for you. But I have used a number of headlamps. I would personally look for a lamp with the following features:
High LED count (brighter light, more efficient), separate battery pack located on the back (for balance), center strap (for comfort and stability), water resistance (I can't tell you how many times I've submerged when going for a water snake or frog), and red lenses (I band birds too...good for night predators).

When I went to Belize a few years ago, we bought some kinda cheap Rayovac headlamps for night herping. They worked pretty well. If I remember correctly, the red light option made lizard and spider eyes light up pretty well. I have no idea what the lumen count was on it though.
