The most exciting find for me was a box turtle laying eggs beside the railroad tracks behind my house. She was in an egg-laying "trance" and didn't try to get away from me. Luckily, I was a good kid and didn't bother her or the eggs. =)

Albino Sonoran Mud Turtle in Arizona, I gave it to my cousin who gave it to his mom. It seems to have disappeared since then. I wish I knew what I had found back then. I still haven’t found anything to rival that.

When I was about 7 I found a pristine, intact Pterodactyl skeleton under a train trestle while I was looking for snakes (yes, even at 7). I was destined to be famous, probably get a book deal and for sure a parade in my honor! My mom convinced me to call and talk to the State museum curator who explained to me what a Great blue heron was, and how I had stumbled across its remains. Thus effectively crushing me and ending all hopes of a National Doug Day becoming a sacred holiday. Damn curators!

As a youngster in the Chicago suburbs near my home, I caught garter snakes by the dozens.Nothing else. I always dreamed of catching something else, then one day, I was turning over a bunch of old railroad ties, and there it was.I momentarily froze, as I couldn't believe what I was looking at.My first non garter snake, a beautiful western fox snake.I was on cloud 9.I kept that snake for awhile and then had to let it go where I found it.(my parents weren't big snake fans)But when I got a little older, and could travel further from home, I found many more species and a lot more fox snakes. After I moved to GA in '81 I never saw another fox snake. A couple years ago I started thinking about them and thought about adding one or two to my collection.I soon found that they weren't available anywhere. I never saw them at the few shows I went to,and the rare times I saw them on the web, they were neonates, and shipping was more than I was willing to pay.(I've never bought a snake over the internet, probably never will)A while back I emailed a well known herpetologist in the Chicago area to ask about them, as I was wondering if maybe they were protected or something, and if not, did he know anyone that offered CB for sale, and joked about would I be better off hitting some of my old stomping grounds and catching 1 or 2 of my own?(all subdivisions now) He gave me some BS about diminishing wild populations in a pretty rude return email. Anyways, a friend of mine went to the Charlotte,SC show recently, and called me with info that a vendor had fox snake neonates available. He picked me up 2 and I finally have fox snakes back in my collection. And so far they're eating well and doing fine. Take care, Marty

Just this Spring I found an unknown species of Nerodia.
It was a dull caramel color, with absolutly no pattern. I thought I had found a new species..
After keeping him for about 2 weeks he shed.. And that's when I learned he was a blotched water snake.
