Can anyone please tell me the mechanism of action for Catalase, (is this mass action leading to H2O2 build up) and what the clinical effects are for the recipient of a bite that contains this enzyme?
Thank you

Catalase breaks down hydrogen peroxide (which can form harmful reactive oxygen intermediates) into harmless water and oxygen. Catalase is present in most every living cell. Catalase + H2O2 + H2O -> O2 + 2H2O. H2O2 has some hemostatic properties and so its likely that inundating the system with catalase would have some sort of synergistic effect with other hemotoxic components in the venom.

.....in particular H2O2 can cause platelet aggregation once platelets have been exposed to aggregating agents such as ADP....but disaggregation can also follow this. metabolites such as O2 and H2O2 can act as second messengers in various components of hemostasis. So, again, in short, catalase would probably be synergistic with hemotoxins in the venom.

Possibly, but depending on the nuances of the given situation it could have either effect I would imagine. There are actually some venoms that inhibit cellular catalase as well.
