Well, I am out of Hot keeping for now. I traded what I have for some an albino boa and some other stuff I needed. I am disopointed that I gont have my venomus little buget any more, but it is also a load off. I have pic's of the herp room I just need some help posting them. And yes, the snake went to a pro. The Boa bit me about 15 mins. ago to let me know that it wouldent ley my life get boring. When all the kids move out I plan on starting up a hot collection again.

Hey there is a world of really cool snakes that aren't venomous... I'm seriously thinking of expanding my collection into the Oreocryptophis porphyraceus ssp. list... U.S.C.B. Mandarin ratsnakes are very neat and easy to keep snakes as well.

It was a very cool snake, but I was always paranoid that it would get loose or something. And the Wife would complain about it at least twice a week. As for only keeping one snake, I was under the impression that it is generally considered a bad idea to keep more animals then you can provide superb care for. And as far as hots go, in my book one is enough and for now at least, none are better. My kids can now go into the herp room and hang out and help take care of the snakes. We are thinking about a beardie or two for Christmas. As for the trade, The fellow has wanted that snake for ever. He wanted it when it was available, but I got it because I was home and he was not. Any way, Happy Holly Days, And may Santa leave deadly critters in your stockings (properly bagged and boxed that is).

When a person has a constant fear of the animal in there house it is time to not have the animal. As well if it was a rift in your marriage then it is time to stop.To me this is a good thing as you were not ready to own a venomous snake.Just becouse a person has kept non vens for a long time does not mean that they will ever be ready for a venomous snake. In fact if you have to ask yourself or any one else if you are ready then you most likely are not ready.I never asked this question ever.I have not lost one second of sleep wondering if my snake will escape.Keeping venomous snakes is not for you....

Oh, it is, just not at this time. The Wife likes them as well but we just want to feel right about it before we get into them again. We had that snake for quite awhile, and never had an escape. and I took it as a favor for a friend who would not live in an apartment with a venomous snake. At this time, I don't have what I consider the right set up for venomous, the vet won't see hots because his insurance wont cover him if he does, I am having trouble keeping consistent temps in multiple cages, and I just don't like my set up yet. One day I will keep them again, but just not right now. I still have all my fingers, and I have no close call stories from animals I keep and have kept. I am happy with what I got at this time. Now, what is strange is that if a member of this site expresses concern about his/her set up, or does not keep 50 plus animals then they are not ready to keep venomous. I also own Pit Bull dogs. i am concerned that they may escape the yard and get into trouble. Because of this, I check our fence daily in the morning and evening. They stay in a crate when company is over and while we are at work. If a person feel the same as I do in regards to Pit Bulls does that make them incapable of keeping them ? On many of the other message boards as well as YouTube you can see loads of photo's of folks who should not own hots let alone large constrictors. You see it in they way they are handled and in how they are kept. In my mind, if you are 100% comfortable when handling hots, and 100% comfortable in there inability to escape there enclosure or 100% sure that your kids would never swipe the keys to the hot room to show there friends whats there then you are not ready to keep the hots.

I do not keep 50 I keep about 16 vens and have had 300 at once before .I was only going by your words not trying to insult you if I did I am sorry. These fears you speak of I do not have and never will.My kid has his own hot room and had a life time of mentoring. If you have proper cageing and use proper equipment you will always be safe. Now granted I have made a tonne of mistakes and paid dearly .I hope when you are ready ,you will continue to enjoy this hobby as I do.You are right, there is such a thing as too many snakes to care for, I am not there yet but have been before.I hope to see you keep posting any way..Thanks Archie

Oh, I am not offended, its just hard to get my point across when I am not sitting across from some one and talking with them. I felt the same with my hand guns to when the kids were born, and got rid of them all. I also like all my bases covered and evrything perfict. I like hots and all, it's just that my situation is not perfict just now. I hope to never get bit. By all accounts it is not something that is verry fun at all. Now 300 venomus snakes ! I could not do that. I know a guy who has 13 and to me thats a hand full. I figure I will never keep more them 4 hot or other wise. That is a number that I can be positive I can keep clean, fat, and sassey. Not that some cant do that with more, just that I cant. Happy Holly Days.

CSdeadboy,
Sounds like you have set reasonable limits for yourself and family. Because you dont keep dozens at one time does not make you any less of an enthusiast. In fact it may stand to reason that it is the better keeper who keeps a few responsibly than dozens marginally.
Thanks for the post and reminder!!
