I have had one encounter with my Javan spitting cobras, where they hiss so deep, that it sounds as though its a light roar, like one of a mammal.
There is also a Mark Oshea episode where he tries to distinguish if King Cobras (O. hannah) can hear or not. He tests this by the "roar" of the king cobra. I believe he also said it wasnt exactly a hiss, and was a different noise produced by the snake, which sounds like a roar and isnt a deep hiss.
Hope i could help
Chris

Thank you for your reply. If anyone is interested, so far I have recevied info on a rattlesnake that can mimic a car engine, a bull head rat snake that can mimic a rattle of a rattlesnake with its mouth, a bull snake that can growl like a domestic cat and a red coach whip that can growl as loud as a cornered bobcat.

Hi
just signed up was looking for info on black snakes that growl ? 2 years ago a HUGE 6-7 foot black snake that was in my garden wondering where my chickens(eggs) were, got into it with my dog...anyway I was shocked when this snake started growling at my dog very loudly who was still barking at him ..I made the dog be quiet so I could make sure it was coming from the snake ?? Could'nt believe my ears...anyway thought I would pass it on. In Missouri.
