Sadly enough, it is in the nature of venomous snakes to attract wackos, and in the nature of the public to view anyone who works with them as being a wacko, regardless of their knowledge, experience and sincere interest in the field. I`m all for the liberal issuance of Darwin awards - if only they didn't generate so much harmful press.

Quite a bit of these snakes being free handled are venomoid. I think that gives some people the idea that they can free handle. I disagree with the whole idea/process of venomoids. Even a venomoid snake SHOULD NOT BE FREE HANDLED!! I really wish people who do these things would find another hobby and quit risking ours!

Charles, about idiots "risking our hobby", they just don't give a shit. If venomous keeping ever gets completely outlawed (God, I hope not), they'll either go underground or just say "That was fun. Now where's something else I can do for kicks?"

To me free handling is about the same as popping a wheelie on your motorcycle. It doesn’t necessarily make all motorcycle riders look like idiots, but you probably shouldn’t do it on the highway. In some way, to me, it does make the hysteria surrounding venomous reptiles seem a lot more like hysteria. Nobody gets on the evening news from free handling, it’s the bite, and finding out the guy didn’t have the proper permits or something like that.
