Wildlife Board/RAC meeting schedule DWR considers making poisonous snakes legal
February 4th, 2010 @ 10:03pm
By Alex Cabrero
SALT LAKE CITY -- Right now, it's illegal to catch and keep a rattlesnake in Utah, but that could soon change. The Division of Wildlife Resources is considering new rules that could allow people to keep the poisonous snakes indoors.
DWR says the proposal is an effort to try and make keeping snakes safer, even though they make a lot of people nervous. .......
"What we're trying to do is be proactive and take a look at: Can we put some control on how many these people collect?" says Krissy Wilson, native species coordinator for DWR.
She says she knows people already have rattlesnakes illegally. She thinks this plan will make safety a priority.
"We're looking at what the cages will be constructed of, where they hold them, the security of the room, first aid kids," Wilson says.

If this is true then I applaud Krissy Wilson for being openminded and for thinking progressively. I hope such a thing gains momentum in Utah and is passed, and then proves to be successful. That would set a precedent that other law makers and states could look to.

Too bad this doesn't apply to venomous snakes.
I guess they just plan on eating the heads of the rattlesnakes?

Wow, that's a refreshing change of headline here. Archie, Tim is playing on their use of the all-too common faux pas "poisonous" rather than venomous when talking about snakes. That really drives me nuts too [along with politicians who say "nukyular" instead of "nuclear." Is the thing in the middle of a cell a "nukyulus" or a "nucleus?"].

Well I read it again, and it states that Krissy Wilson is the native species coordinator for DWR.(whatever that is) I guess that would mean only native stuff.

Driving While Reading? Or in the personal ads, I guess it could be "Divorced White Redneck." In this case it probably stands for Department of Wild Resources or something like that. I don't know who Krissy Wilson is, but I think I love her. Common sense is anything but common. As we have seen elsewhere, blanket prohibitions, which may be the easiest route for politicians, drive things underground and create a raft of new, unanticipated problems. We need more imaginative solutions. I hope Krissy succeeds and moves up to the national level.

I am happy a change like this is coming around. I have wanted to keep rattlesnakes for a while now. To even be able to catch and photograph them would be great. I have been interested in snakes my whole life and a about six or seven years ago my grandfather caught a rattlesnake and showed it before releasing it. I've been interested ever since.
