THE TRUTH ABOUT BIG PYTHON SPECIES
By:
Robert Keziah in Clover S.C.
My name is Robert Keziah and I have owned Burmese Pythons and Reticulated Pythons for ten years. I am writing this in regards to all of the negative attention that the media and television networks have given this species. I will admit they are living wild in Florida and it has become a small problem in that ONE state but to show on national television that they can live in 50 percent or more of the country is preposterous. This is absolutely complete ignorance in understanding the species. I will explain some of the basics these animals need to survive.
Like I said earlier, I have kept these pythons for ten years and I know these species (along with MANY others) could not survive in any other part of this country due to climate. Here are quite a few facts that are never made available to the public. The bottom tip of florida is the only suitable habitat for these species and the temperature there dropped to 30 degrees this year and killed many of them because they cannot live in that temperature gradient. As a matter of fact ,one day of that temperature will kill any snake. hese species need to have a constant year round temperature of 80 degrees or more and a minimum relative humidity of 50 percent. This humidity needs to be present year round also. If they were to be at temps lower than 80 degrees and relative humidity lower than 50 percent, Respiratory Infections would set in ad that will kill any snake very fast. Also they cannot properly digest food at too low of a temperature and would die of an impaction. This means the food item will never be digested and will turn solid as a rock and kill them. Heat aids in the digestion and digestion is not possible without this. There were several Burmese Pythons found dead in Florida because the temperature dropped too low this past winter. When it is 30 degrees it's just not possible for these animals to survive. Even 60 degrees is pushing the survival of these species. There was a study performed on them here in S.C. and none of them made it through the winter. These animals are a tropical species and MUST have a tropical climate in order to survive. This country has temperate climate and absolutely will not provide the proper habitat for these animals to survive.
After all of the negative attention fom the television networks, politicians, and the media I feel this needs to be brought to the publics attention. There are tens of thousands of people keeping pythons as pets throughout the country and they will all agree with this publication. Not just because they want to keep their pythons, but because these are REAL facts about these animals.

Rob, Thanks for trying to help.
Hopefully, your letter will be printed in the newspaper.
Perhaps someone will pay attention to it.
The media campaign against these snakes is huge now.
Reptile folks had a chance to stop all of this last year, but caved in to a handful of very vocal python breeders.
Those breeders are the ones you can thank when you lose your rights to keep the large constrictors.
More than anyone else, they are directly responsible for the escalation of the proposed regulations to the federal level.
Best Regards

For a year now I have been writing letters to politicians, sending emails and follow up phone calls, but usually you have to call alot before you actually talk to them but that is no reason to give up. I have been doing everything I can to try and help stop this. I wish I had could call Obama and talk to him about it...lol. But I know I have done everything to try and help and stop this even though I'm an ant compared to society but if no one speaks up this would pass and be forgotten about it like a small breeze. If I can get this printed it will be one more thing I know I have done to help. It's like not voting and then B******* about who is in office. Same principal.

Rob, you should be proud of what you have done to help.
And, there are many others like you, who have written letters, attended meetings, sent emails, etc.
There is still a chance the reptile folks can win.
That hinges on the Lacey Act being used in ways it has never was intended, and, on the loss of jobs that outlawing these snakes will create.
It is not over until it is over, and I have not seen any fat lady singing yet.
However, when that fat lady gets up on stage, she is going to be a whole lot bigger and badder than she was a year ago.
Best Regards

John, can you elaborate on this very vocal group of python breeders? This is news to me, and surprising since it seems they would have more at stake in this issue. Unfortunately we are all, as individuals, "ants" in this struggle, which is why I think your best bet is to join USARK now. I am incredibly impressed by their success in fighting these battles for us - most recently blocking the proposed ban of non-native turtles and frogs in California. More than anyone else, USARK has given an effective, professional and unified voice to the "Reptile Nation."

I have been a member of USARK for a year now. I have even talked with andrew through email quite a few times for the most effective things we as keepers can do.

Excellent - then you know about the proposed rule change adding the nine constrictors to the Lacey Act being signed by the Secretary of the Interior. Does anyone even have any Deshauensee's anacondas? I haven't seen them offered, but I want some before this goes into effect. Would also like to find a nice-looking adult male Surinam red-tail.

Just a thought. I know that both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have both printed possitive articles pertaining to our cause. And those are news papers that people all around the country read! You should try to send them some copies and follow up with them on the situation! I agree that the facts need to come out in the mainstream media!! The media if you look at it my way are really the ones that run the goverment!! Thats how Obama got elected cause he was all the press other than Fox News talked about!
