but if you go to almost any saltmarsh during low tide you should see them in numbers, the best time is when its smoking hot, they usually pile up to catch croakers in the shallows, some take blue crabs as well.

I find that hard to believe. I have lived in va beach all my life and have yet to see one. I hunt snakes regularly and have never seen one near the salt water.

I was born in V.B. and lived there most of my life. The best place I found for cottonmouths was in the canals throughout the city and Dismal Swamp. I used to catch them during hunting season sunning themselves there.

HUH, the cottons in fl (as well as VA) venture into brackish, salt, and even offshore water. I have captured many cottons in both Minnow and crab baskets in salt water (as long as the tide goes low enough for them to breath). Cottons are common in VA Beach, the dismal, NNews state park, and in the back bays of hampton where they seem to prefer dining on eels in the brackish water but I have seen um eat the little blue crabs as well(as they hit my eel pots pretty hard, I use um for cobia). I have herped NC for a couple of years and dont see lots of pigs, meanwhile I have a local hunting buddy here who has seen over a dozen this year already, just cause ya aint seein um dont mean ther not there.

Never have found one at Stumpy Lake.
But I have found them at Sandbridge, at the lotus pond on the way to Sandbridge, in the brackish/salt canal one block inland from the beach at Sandbridge, throughout Pungo and at Seashore State Park.
While I was neither born in Virginia Beach nor have I lived there all my life, I did find quite a few resident Cottonmouths without a great deal of effort while I attended Floyd E. Kellam High School in the 70s.
There used to be a huge lake behind Bayside High School where I used to hunt snakes as a much younger child (ie: in the 60s). There were Cottonmouths back in there back then but of course no-one believed me which is just as well since I am sure that my father would have put an end to my snake hunting had he really believed that I was finding venomous snakes before my age hit double digits.
There may not be any Cottonmouths in Virginia Beach anymore as all of my experience is from years ago. But there certainly used to be.

Yeah they are still there, last summer when I was home I saw a fishing segment on the news (in a back bay in Va beach) And the reporter almost left the damn boat as a nice sized cotton swam right up to the side to see what they were catching (specks I believe). They are still around, I am heading out to the eastern shore next month to attempt to document them on the SE edge of the shore, I have never seen any there (nor are they documented there) but I have some good sources telling me they have seen pops. They are the toughest snake species in the friggin world, wouldnt surprise me if a couple made that 18mile swim (they had better stay close to the pilings though LOL).
