Mud Snakes are really cool but definitely the most challenging species I have ever worked with - still learning, talking to the old timers, combing literature for field encounters, etc. I was supposed to speak about them at the IHS in Tucson but funding is non-existent at the moment. They are a royal pain but super cool...mine will only take amphiumas and gag when I try to sneak a mouse in there. The ubiquitous garter snake is perhaps my favorite all time educational animal and one that is RARELY used in any talks I have ever seen - what a shame. Guess folks like to stick with the sexy stuff but the measure of an excellent wildlife educator is the ability to use a common animal like a garter and telling the real story behind this amazing serpent.

I do a few educational shows a year. Here is what I make sure to have: (I live in NC)
Brown Snake
Worm Snake
Eastern Chain King
Corn Snake
Juvi Black Rat (with pattern showing)
Adult Black Rat
Racer
Scarlet King
Hognose
and I usually throw in a few corn morphs for variety
If I thought the venue would allow it, I would surely take a copperhead and cotton mouth. Usually I am educating about thwt is found in their back yards. It makes for a good starting point.
