Yesterday one of our dogs got out and ran off a little ways . My 16 year old daughter took off after him , caught him and took a short cut across an empty lot kitty - corner from our house . Through the weeds , brush , and rock piles . She was running BAREFOOT , and came within 2-3 inches of stepping on a snake . I went on this site and started showing her pics , at the second one she said " That's it , it looked exactly like that "
Copperhead . I broke out in a fresh sweat , believe me !!!
I'll be wandering through there , if I run into it a transplant will happen . Kids , cats , and dogs go through that lot all the time .
WHEEEW !

Imboden , Arkansas . ( NE part of the state )
Coppers are pretty common around here , I know of a couple people here who have run into them in the last couple weeks . ( of course at least one of them was 6 feet long )
I checked her on a fair number of different snake pics , even after she ID'd one , and she stuck to it .
She held her hands about 20-24 inches apart to show me the size , which is probably about right .
A side question just out of curiousity , anyone here ever seen a 6' copperhead ???

I once thought it wasn't possible to find a 4 foot plus garter....until I did on a remote island in Lake Michigan...58 inches. Never say never:-)

Allright , I guess I'll consider it possible but not too likely . I've also been told there are 8 foot rattlesnakes around here . Thanks for the info .

A man who operated a flea market/bluegrass jamboree place on Rt. 57 in Patrick County VA kept a 54" copperhead there as a curiosity. He had raised it from a juvenile and kept it in a large homemade cage festooned with padlocks. He had finally decided to give it to me, but before he had a chance to tell me this, the light in the cage burned out one cold night and the snake died. Aargh.
