Hi everyone,
Can someone please explain to me what regulates the production of venom in the gland. I am wondering what mechanism triggers the production of more venom and regulates volume? Are there any enzymes that hydrolyze old or non-functional proteins in the gland for transport back to the cells for recycling? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Kelly

BGF is in the Andaman Islands (near India) doing field work right now and probably isn't checking this site.
You might get a better chance of a response if you contact him through his site.

Hi Guys,
I posted this question on Dr Fry's venomdoc.com site as well and (I'm paraphrasing him here) was advised that this is one of those seemingly basic physiological processes that we in fact know very little about. Fabian ( a site member) suggested that this might be regulated by pressure on nerves, sort of like your stomach feeling empty, but unfortunatly what regulates this process is not confirmed. If anyone has any additional info on this, please chime in. I do not know if there are issues with actually testing this or something but it seems like very interseting stuff to me.
Thank you,
Kelly

Sensory nerves consist of chemoreceptors (smell/taste), nociceptors (pain), thermoreceptors (heat/cold) and mechanoreceptors.
Mechanoreceptors are specialized nerves that sense touch or manipulation of some kind. The strech receptors in the stomach are examples of mechanoreceptors, as well as hair cells in the inner ear to sense the vibrations created by sound waves.
