Very well said, Doug.
I may have to print that and carry it in my wallet.
I bet I know who told you that in Abilene, too.

I have to say this was a very amusing thread and I know Im jumping on the boat a bit late, but I had to say somthing because this tread was hysterical. That being said, Doug I have to say thoes snakes are beautiful. Not to mention I completly agree with what your qoute from earlier.
"If you can marvel at the Komodo dragon at the zoo, but walk right by the anole on the side of the building twenty seconds later and not be at least somewhat equally as enthralled, then you just may have lost what being a herp person really is. Or, perhaps you never truly had it."
This for me encompasses the ideal attitude anyone and everyone in this field should have. Being from the chicagoland area we dont have large numbers of lizards and snakes all over the place. Well, kinda, we do hav plenty of amphibians and a few species of snakes. Getting back on track, I have only been to FL once in my life and that was my soph year of HS. We were in Sarasota, and my friend I had traveled with found it quite amusing I spent more time chasing anoles, and snakes than the time I had spent on the beach.
The bottom line being I believe we all need to find that spark of interest that led us to these animals, whether its just a hobby or your lifes work, revisiting that feeling you had as you wandered through the retile exhibit as a kid may be somewhat theraputic.
Take care everyone and stay safe. ;)
