I am looking for a good place to find some solid statistics done on the effect of rattlesnake roundups on populations. Have any snakes been completely extirpated from a county? Is there a study on the effects of gassing burrows? Any info helps.

Jonathan Campbell did a study on this very subject of gassing about 20 years ago.
Round-up folks by there own admittance now travel hundreds of miles to acquire more snakes for round-ups due to scarcity.

Just came from a meeting where there was a presentation by Bruce Means on the effects of the various roundups. I think he said the paper about the study was almost done. I don't think there have been any counties extirpated. Without stealing Bruce's thunder, there are definite trends in both the number of snakes collected and the size of snakes collected over the years. On a side note, many of you know Bruce has been writing the definitive book on eastern diamondbacks for the last 20+ years, but I actually saw the first draft that had been sent out for review. Don't hold your breath, but it looks like a real possibility in the near future.

In the book "Conservation Guide to the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake Crotalus adamanteus" by Walter Timmerman and William H. Martin, there is plenty of info on the studies that have been done on EDB's with regard to roundups.

Bob, it would be great if Bruce actually finished that book someday, however, after 20 years of folks waiting for it (and many paying for a copy in advance) I will only believe it when I have an actual copy of the book in my hands.
