Hi guys,
To all of you who keep captive bred venomous snakes, what sorts of diseases are you seeing? Do these occur as frequently in wild snakes?
Thanks

Most diseases of captive snakes that I see are husbandry-related; a point which is obviously moot in the wild.
Ones I often see that are common to CB and wild animals are protozoan gastro-intestinal infections. They're part of the normal gut flora for most snakes, but can bloom out of control in the right circumstances.
IMHO, the diseases between CB and wild snakes are on completely different ends of the spectrum. A respiratory infection in a captive snake 9 times out of 10 is caused by improper husbandry. The other 1 out of 10 is usually a freak occurrence or perhaps an old/weak animal... after all, everything gets sick at some point. Wild populations have a whole host of exposures to different pathogens and health issues that captive snakes wouldn't have to worry about. Therefore the same respiratory infection in a wild snake may have come about for completely different reasons than in the captive animal.
So perhaps the most important question is not which specific pathogens cause the infections, but rather what conditions brought about the infection in the first place?
