I've heard of this too. Sometimes they are non-venomous snakes with sticks inserted subcutaneously to make them appear to ahve a hood.
If I remember correctly, there are certain quotas in countries like Thailand of how many of a certain species may be exported yearly... but I don't know how well it's monitored. I'm sure habitat destruction makes up for more deaths.

Ive had a tequila like alchol with a baby burmese submerged in it in the bottle. VERY interesting taste as well as effect on me.
