Recently, we had several cages constructed that include the use of axial fans placed near basking lamps and the installation of full spectrum lights and UV lighting. The idea is to allow certain species, in this case, sighthunters like racers and coachwhips, to bask at higher temperatures for more prolonged periods of time like they do in nature but w/out the worry of overheating. Anyone who has spent time in the field, and performed some inner coil basking temp studies will know that even on mild spring sunny days, these snakes love to crank up their core temps. Although in its early experimental stages, the effects have been dramatic...increased feeding response, periscoping behaviors, and an overall increased inquisitiveness of their surroundings. I also added Lumichromes and Zoo Med (10.0) to these cages. I'm now strongly considering doing that with most of our snakes. We're working on a study at the moment to show the positive affects of using vented cages using axial fans. Just thought I'd share these observations.

Id have to agree. I used full spectrum and fans on almost all my ssp. Especially my arboreals. They seem to be more active than ever. My cerataphora sit directly under the fan at least once a day, but are very active in moving around the cage. I also keep my ambient room temp around 70 to 72 degrees. Dropping the temp seems to have made everybody more and more active in movement and feeding plus weekly defications. Even in my waggies! I also have stands in my back yard for real sunning purposes. Nothing like a lil vitamin d to boost there health and sheen. Let us know your findings when youve reached a verdict.

I've been using these fans for years on my cages. I get them for free from work off of old office equipment that folks trade in.(mostly old copiers)We strip them down and salvage anything we can and scrap the rest. And the ones I use run on 24 volts, they don't cost hardly anything to run. Radio Shack sells some that are 110 volts.

I also use the PC fans. They work great to keep humidity within reasonable parameters, in semi-aquatic reptile enclosures. I'll use one to bring in fresh air, and another, for exhaust air. I too, salvage a lot of those PC-type fans, Marty.. I do also use some of the larger ones (RadioShack is great!) for some of my larger enclosures.
I find that most arboreals (as well as most Crotalus), don't like the direct draft, so I have used homemade "hoods", that house the lighting on arboreal setups, and allow the fans to blow across the vented top of the enclosure, rather than blowing directly on the snakes. Definitely allows the tree-huggers and the timbers, to stay closer to the lights, right where they like it, and almost completely eliminates the risk of burns, and over-heating.
Take Care,
-John Mendrola
