I'm glad to see that this thread didn't get as heated as I thought it would when I saw the 1st post. But I'm all for good competition, that benefits the consumer (customers at the shows) more than anything else. I would love to see Jay and Repticon do very well. Maybe Jay will expand to other cities as well. It will only benefit everyone. I won't take sides, I just want to see the industry flourish. That makes it harder for "anti- laws" to be passed. Take care, Marty

Well said, Marty. I hope lots of folks will visit Myrtle Beach for one or both of the shows. One thing Jay may have overlooked is the astronomical room rates in July. In September, there will be bargain rooms available. For folks on a budget, the cost of lodging is a real concern.
If Jay's show attracts primarily locals and drive-in folks, attendance may be weak. His low rates for tables should incent vendors to swallow the cost of hotel rooms.
We shall see!
Cheers,
Don

I do not feel it is fair to the vendors or the customers to have to split between the shows or choose which one to attend. I feel this will only drive down the attendance, and cause vendors to do poorly than if there was only one show scheduled.
I also have issue with some of the vendors that sell in Columbia, as there are more than a few with unhealthy looking animals. As many of you know, I brought home a virus from the November 2009 show and it wiped out my entire collection. Another friend bought animals at the June 2010 show and brought home another virus that wiped out his collection. It would be nice if Repticon would take a stand against these type of vendors to promote a show that actually looks at animals as they are set up and requires a visual inspection of all animals for sale.
The same people attend year after year, and without naming names...those of you that have attended past shows know who they are.
It would also be nice to finally have a "inquisition" about what happened to my collection by being contacted by a Repticon representative to at least acknowledge there is a serious problem that is re-occuring at the Columbia SC show. It needs addressed before another collection is eradicated...
Nothing slanderous here, just pure factual...backed by a scientific expert in OPMV.
Respectfully,
Paul R. Moody

Paul,
I don't know who those vendors are, and would like to know, in case they are vending at my show's in San Antonio.
If I know for a fact they are not vending at my show's, then no worries, but please name them, so in the future I can prevent this castrophe from happening to my vendor's and customers.
thanks,
Randal

This may not set well with the herp show folks, but I'd be VERY hesitant to bring home an animal from one of those places. The opportunity to get germs is just too huge. So many animals from so many sources.........some of them have to be diseased, wormy, etc. One could buy a perfectly healthy animal and carry a pathogen home on one's clothing. The shows are fun to attend, although crowds and uncontrolled children tend to take the edge off. So I go to the show for the SHOW. And I make a sincere effort to decontaminate after. Paul, I understood that your germ came from state boys with a dirty hook. What changed your mind?

scientific fact changed my mind and was proved by the best OPMV expert in the country...traced to one animal...that was housed temporarily at that show...

Ok Paul you say you have proof that You took something home with you from the show (changing your story)I have a few questions for you:
1) When did you find this out?
2) How do you know that it came from 1 specific animal out of the thousands that was there?
3) post the proof, and I want to see where it say what animal it came from!

Paul, you stated, "I do not feel it is fair to the vendors or the customers to have to split between the shows or choose which one to attend." Competition means the folks that run the shows will be trying to out-do each other by making their show the best one, by better quality, better choices, and lower prices, so that the customers and the vendors will choose to attend their show. (or both) It benefits the consumer greatly, the same holds true for any business. The one that the customers choose is the better venue/value, wins. The other either improves, or accepts 2nd rate status, or closes their doors. That's the free market/capitalism working. Just like Burger King/McDonalds, or Kmart/WalMart, only in this case, a much smaller scale. Is it not "fair" that you have to choose which place to go buy a burger? I think that it would not be "fair" if there wasn't several to choose from. Take care, Marty

Paul if you had proof that it came from someone at the show why was no one notified about the issues to begin with?

Cathy,
Dr. Elliott R. Jacobson, DVM, MS, PhD. Associate Chair and Professor Zoological Medicine Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences.
Dr. Jacobson has taken this entire situation from initial testing of live animals to the necropsy and examination of deceased animals and has determined down to the time line of arrival which specific animals that came into the collection and pinpointed those animals as the avenue of introduction. Dr. Jacobson has studied this virus and reproduced it in the laboratory. It is similar to a strain that is currently under study in Germany. It is considered a new strain of OPMV here in the USA and sparked interest by Dr. Jacobson.
I will not place personal emails here for viewing as this is not the topic of this thread. If you would like to seriously know what was conducted and results you may email me and I will correspond with the appropriate person in charge of Repticon shows.
There is no disputing the results...Dr. Jacobson is a expert in this field of study and has authored many scientific papers on the subject of OPMV. The study is still ongoing and Dr. Jacobson is intending on writing a paper on the study to the best of my knowledge.
Regards,
Paul Moody
