This forum is mainly for Chewwy and Elapid62 who earlier had a forum up about Joseph Slowinski but hopefully others will be drawn to this for some info on him. I finally got out of the field and have time for some internet so I just looked at their old forum discussion.
I too truly enjoyed Slowinski's research and dedication to herpetology and was dreadfully sorry to hear about his death. He was one of my favorite herpetologists and was quickly on his way to becoming one of the greats. He was soo busy doing incredible research projects and journal writings that I can't imagine how he got so much done so quickly. There is a webpage describing his life and passion for herpetology at http://www.nhm.ac.uk/hosted_sites/ch/jbs_mem.htm This webpage also has links to other webpages of his with a lot of info on him and his research.
If the link above doesn't work then I have his dedication link on my links page of my website that goes straight to it.
Currently there is serious consideration in the herpetology community to seperate Elaphe guttata from two subspecies into three seperate species. Hopefully this will pass finally since so many of us (mostly splitters like myself) have been waiting for something to be done about Elaphe guttata for some time. Heading up the request for this change in taxonomy are Joseph T. Collins and Frank T. Burbrink. Their proposal is that Elaphe guttata guttata (corn snake) will become the Eastern corn snake - Elaphe guttata (no subspecies currently set and most likely won't have any soon). Great Plains rat snake (Elaphe guttata emoryi) will become the Western Great Plains rat snake (Elaphe emoryi). And best of all. A seperation of the corn snake from eastern Texas and western Louisiana will be made to create a seperate species Slowinski's corn snake (Elaphe slowinskii). I am sure that he will eventually have a venomous snake named after him but this will certainly be a good start. After all, Laurence Klauber has the Banded Rock rattlesnake (Crotalus lepidus klauberi) named after him and he didn't even like rattlesnakes.
Well, I wish I could have eventually gotten to know Dr. Slowinski because he was easily one of the best herpetologists out there and actually got things done in the field. In his relatively short lived field herpetology career he discovered 18 new species of reptiles and amphibians, including one new species of cobra. There are few herpetologists I would have liked to meet before him but hopefully he has inspired others to take over where he left off.
In memory of a great herpetologist,

Hey Russ,
I was going to e-mail you but couldn't find an e-mail address in your profile. So I am posting this in hopes that you see it before you spend hours typing and researching on Joseph Slowinski. Just thought that you might want to know that I already finished the Slowinski article for Chris Harper a few days ago and he is editing it right now for usage on the site. His address for writing the Slowinski tribute was to me and we had made the agreement about a week ago. Sorry if you misunderstood his message and I hope you haven't spent a lot of time on it. The article should be put on the website soon and I hope that everyone enjoys it.
