Hello everyone,
The town were I live has just put out a notice of "do not drink the water" happens here every so often. It is cause by a high percentage of E.coli in city's drinking water. My question is does E.coli affect snakes in any adverse way? Most of my snakes have small water bowls or tubs any way so no big deal to use bottled water. However I was curious if the bacteria was detrimental to snakes in any way?
Thanks,
J.S.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'd ask another question.... why take a chance on "brewing" up a little E. coli in the digestive tracts of your snakes, that you might catch later on through contact with their feces, if you can avoid it? I would think that boiling the water for several minutes should kill the bacteria, after which time it would be safe to drink (cooled of course) for you and your animals.

I always use bottled water for all my animals except rodents. Our water is from a 'local' well and isn't up to my standards. I would use bottled water for the rodents but they drink too much. I check the EPA report every year to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong with the water so I don't fear my reptiles getting anything from the rodents. I'm sure you can get an EPA report aside from the E. Coli scare to check what else is in the water. There may be a website that has quarterly reports of the water quality if you search around.
