I am not contesting at all the frequency of copperheads near human habitation - as I said, I've picked up more than I can remember driving through rural residential areas of a hot summer night. What I am contesting is their ability to survive - for long - in such areas, where the likelihood of human contact, more often with fatal consequences to the snake, will occur. What I advocate is the collection of snakes only from stressed, developed habitats, or habitats where the bulldozers are poised for destruction, rather than relatively safe wilderness habitats where the snakes should be left alone.
