I'm giving serious thought to attending sometime in 2012. Is there a time of year better than others to attend as far as things going on there, or does that not matter? Thanks!

I just went there a couple of weeks ago. It was very nice. It is a very clean place. The animals are in excellent health and well cared for. Their emphasis is Bushmasters. The only thing is there are palmetto bugs all over the place. This would not bother herp keepers or herps, but some visitors may be freaked out by this cause they look like roaches. There was one Mamba that had a big palmetto bug as a domestic partner. They did not seem to mind each other. LOL. There was also an albino burm, nile monitor and anaconda living together peacefully in a large enclosure. I am not a fan of mixing animals from different regions together, from an educational standpoint. It can sometimes confuse people who are not as knowledgeable as Herp fanatics are. The staff was great. I totally recomend going. It was fun and should be supported. The town of Cape fear is very historic and there is much to do and learn there.

Burm, green anaconda and a nile monitor in the same enclosure?...wow, recipe for disaster and yes, that doesn't make any sense at all other than a shortage of space so you cram three big carnivores together and see how Darwin's theory plays out. Wouldn't be surprised if you see a very well fed anaconda one less cagemate at some point.

I've been there at all times of the year and I don't think any specific time is best. Everything is in doors. It's Dean Ripa's place so I don't think it's a surprise that the emphasis is on Lachesis, however they have several other species and their enclosures are awesome. There are also some crocs there. They do feedings around 3 or so on the weekends if I remember correctly. Not sure about feedings during the week. Here's a link to a few pictures that I took the last couple of times that I went up there. -Jamie
