Does anyone know about the laws in Missouri regaurding owning a venomous snake? I would like to get one someday after I learn how to handle one, but I am having a hard time finding any information on Missouri laws. I was just wondering if there is anyone here who has any info. for me.

Look up the St. Louis Herp Society - Steve Brown is the President and he can answer your questions. You are able to obtain a permit and there are different levels. I do, know, however, that you cannot keep venomous herps in the St. Louis area.

The laws in Missouri for keeping venomous reptiles, both native and non native, are as wide as the State. Rob is correct, venomous reptiles are not allowed within the City of St. Louis and several counties and cities around the St. Louis area. The State statue requires that you to register with you local law enforcement. Check your local laws by contacting your local City or County animal control office in your area. If you keep venomous reptiles that are native to Missouri you will need a Class 2 Wildlife Breeders permit from the Missouri Dept. Of Conservation. This permit costs $250 a year and you will have to pass a test before the permit is issued. The Conservation Dept. will send out an agent to inspect your cages for size and security before they will issue a permit. I hope this helps.

Yes, your answer was very informative. Thanks a bunch! A little depressing though....$250.00 is rather steep. But then I am more interested in keeping a vine snake or a cobra over any native MO ones. I really appreciate you taking time to answer my question. Thankfully I do not live in or near St. Lois. I am surprised that they are able to make it illegal to keep a venomous snake. I understand having to have a permit, but just outlawing it for everyone makes me sick.

As far as I am aware vine snakes do not require any permits pretty much anyware as you can buy them in pet stores. They also can be shipped fedex and or ups legally to your door.

Wow, varivenom I didn't know that. Maybe a vine snake would be a good starter snake for me.
