Does anybody know the most recent horridus laws for WV? I would like to legally own a few timbers, but I'm unsure of the laws here in WV and cannot seem to find a DNR official to answer my questions. One officer told me there were no WV laws regulating specifically reptiles, while another officer told me that none may be collected because there is "no open hunting season." There are some beautiful yellows near me and a completely black female as well. She only has part of the rusty dorsal stripe that shows!
Thanks
Eric

Are you implying that you want to remove adult female timbers from a wild population of denning Horridus?

I actually had thought about it because I am in WV, and alot of morons near me love to kill them. I try to keep the locations to myself and remain unnoticed while photographing them, but alot of ATV trails run right by the three dens I know. I've seen a couple timbers without heads near the sites, and I hate to see that. I had actually thought about breeding a pair and returning the little ones back to the den. I'm not sure about its significance, but idiots and now gas well sites are pushing them out in my area.

I am also from wv and as far as i can tell it's illegal to keep any native species it is also illegal to kill any timber in the national forest I know there are alot of uneducated people in the state as well as other states who will not be happy till all snakes are dead especially timber's and copperheads there should be more done to protect our native animals and worry less about passing a law against exotics all because of one careless/unstale persons act
thanks from

I personally am not 100% positive about the law(s) in WV regarding native species, but I too believe that it is illegal to collect or possess native venomous species in WV. I could be wrong, however..
If you DO end up collecting and breeding timbers, PLEASE DO NOT release any of the offspring back into the wild. It might seem harmless, but this is the way that many pathogens are introduced to wild populations. It can also have detrimental effects on the balance of the population (the mortality rate in captivity is much lower than in the wild). These are intricate balances, that many people do not realize. (This could affect wild bloodlines, based on the ancestry of the offspring released).
Captive propagation programs for conservation are useful, but that usually requires a qualified facility, and a strict and thorough disease control protocol, and testing. Even zoological institutions have done more harm than good, in the past, by introducing disease to wild populations.
If you do collect and breed the timbers from your area, PLEASE do not release their offspring. It most often does far more potential harm, than good.
Take Care,
-John Mendrola

Thank you all for the advice. I'm more afraid of the Marcellus Shale drilling than the locals now, as wells are springing up everywhere. I work in this industry, and I know that alot of these guys are petrified of snakes and do not hesitate to kill them. Luckily, I think most of these areas are far enough from the edge of the State Forest Lands that drilling on neighboring properties will leave them uninterrupted. I'll notify the community if anything changes. Thanks again everybody!

I'm glad to see someone else with the same feeling towards snakes as i have. I live in central wv and mountain top removal is the big threat to the population of timbers and other reptiles. we have seen several gas/oil wells going up around here but they pale in the amount of destruction as the mines cause but anyway lets just hope they keep the national forests off limits so there will be some snakes left if you have any further questions or just want to talk snakes feel free to contact me at scottylucena@yahoo.com
i'm no expert but you pick up things here and there.and education is the only chance snakes have around here.
thanks
