Gaboons are nothing like rattlesnakes at all. Trying to compart the 2 is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are round pieces of fruit and that's where all similarity ends.
The consequences of a gaboon bite are very different than a rattlesnake (especially in North America) and they are not always the easiest species to keep (they can get stressed easily).
That being said, they are nice snakes. However, if I were you and only had experience with one rattlesnake, I wouldn't be jumping straight to gaboons. If you want something new and exotic, why not try some of the less toxic Asian arboreals? They are beautiful and lots of fun to maintain. Why not try a small African coral cobra (Aspidelaps ssp)? They are great snakes and will give you some important insight as to how elapids move without such a high statistical chance of fatal consequences IMO. This could prepare you for keeping other elapids later on.
Just my 2 cents. I'm sure if your heart is set on a gaboon you'll probably get one anyway, but try thinking about some less lethal species, especially if you're new to venomous keeping.
