Alright, I have been working with/keeping reptiles my whole life. I have always had an interest in working with venomous snakes and have interacted with them in the past (our native copperheads). This is certainly something I want to do right the first time because there may not be a second time. I fully intend on working with native species first and working my way up. (I really have my heart set on eyelash Vipers). My big question is: are there anyone here located around south-west VA, namely Washington county that I may take an apprenticeship under? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nice to see respect for the hobby being picked up by the younger generations. Good luck in your venture. Be safe.

Really appreciate the support guys. I have no illusions as to the dangers that this particular hobby entails. Afterall there isn't much (with the exception of armed conflict) that making one minute mistake can have immediate and potentially fatal consequences.
Thanks again guys.

You may have seen or read this, but in case you have not here is the link to get Venom 101. Read it, read it again, digest it for a couple weeks and read it again. I sort of forget about it and "find" it about once every year or so. I enjoy reading it every time. Lots of good information. Good luck again. Take care!

oh yeah! I managed to get a copy of this puppy on the 2nd and have read it every day since. Its got some great material in it. I am in the works of getting a Biology professor to work with me; however, I an not sure how it is going to go, due to the fact that I know he is a very busy man and is generally out doing field research in Costa Rica and the last thing I want to be is a bother.
So, in short,I'm still looking for a mentor and am in no way, shape, or form discouraged. If there is one thing that is worth having patience and taking time to do, it is venomous snake husbandry.

Hello,
This may not be advice but food for thought nonetheless. Have you thought about whether you want to be mentored by a private individual or professional institution? There are benefits and set backs to both and is really only something you can decide. Just as a mentor may be selective about who he/she teaches, the apprentice must be conscious about who he/she learns from. Learning bad fundamentals can be as bad or worse then no fundamentals.
Good luck in your search,
