Virginia SB477 isn't on the docket for public hearing this week and will NOT be heard tomorrow (Jan. 19, 2012). It may be heard as early as next week. We will have the opportunity to testify to oppose this Bill at the hearing in front of the committee. Each person will have a small amount of time to speak. Here is a link for tips for testifying: http://legis.virginia.gov/1_cit_guide/tips_testify.html
I plan on attending this hearing and speaking in opposition to this Bill and hope many of you can join me. For those of you that can't attend the hearing, I'd be happy to hand deliver a letter on your behalf. Letters should have your hand signed signature on them to be most effective. Letters should be respectful. Be sure to include that you are opposed to SB477.
I would be happy to offer a ride to anyone that wants to meet at my house in Culpeper. We need as many people to show up at this hearing as possible. We also need a lot of letters. Get your family and friends involved in sending letters. Evan if you are not a Virginia resadent send letters telling how this bill will affect you.
It would be great if someone could post a pre-written letter a person could just fill in their name and print/email.

Subject: Please oppose SENATE BILL NO. 477
Dear Virginia representatives:
I am writing you concerning SB 477. I am a lifelong reptile enthusiast, reptile curator, and resident of VA. I am also president of a reptile enthusiast club with over 100 members. I speak for all of us when I ask you to oppose this legislation. The Bible reads that we are given stewardship over all animals to do with as we see fit and the US Constitution says we are guaranteed the right to pursue what makes us happy. This bill, as written, is contradictory to both Gods law and our constitution. It has been said that our individual rights stop at the point they interfere with the rights of others. I would like to point out there has never been a documented case in the history of VA where a reptile escaped and harmed another party. While at the same time both dogs and horses are responsible for numerous deaths throughout the state’s history. Reptiles have a social prejudice that does not apply equally to dogs or horses, thus reptile owners will suffer unjustly should this bill become law.
We would not oppose a reasonable permitting system for venomous snakes, large constricting snakes, and crocodilians, such as the one in place in the state of FL. This system has been in place for decades and has proved to be quite affective. It has been written that if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns, likewise if SB 477 passes as written, it will serve to make otherwise law abiding and taxpaying citizens into criminals. A permitting system will allow your states residents to continue to pursue the lifestyle which makes them happy and allow the state wildlife officials to have an accurate account of what reptiles are in place and where they are housed. The permitting fees could help to boost the VA wildlife program, while at the same time not impacting the state revenue that is being earned via reptile sales in VA. Reptiles have a multiplier effect on the state’s economy. Not only is tax money earned on the sale of the reptile, but owners must also purchase encloses and pay for the long-term upkeep such as food and bedding. Reptile keeping is not as esoteric as in times past. Many thousand homes in VA now have reptiles and SB 477 outlawing snakes such as harmless Boa Constrictors will affect these homes and revenue for our state.
In closing, I again, ask you to please oppose SB 477 as the bill is un-American, unjust, and bad for the economy of VA.
Sincerely,
Samuel 'Chuck' Hurd

Keep in mind SB477 is the senate bill, but we must also kill HB1242.
HB1242 has been sent to a sub committee is on verge of being passed over. Please contact the members of the sub committee to fight HB1242 as well.
These bills are from the HSUS. Are you going to let a animal rights group have your animals put to death?

Dangerous & Exotic Animals in Virginia, Updates and Webinar
Greetings,
We are writing with an update on the effort to identify issues and develop potential recommendations around public safety and potentially dangerous animals in Virginia. We invite you to join a Webinar with key background information on the morning of Wed. August 29th -- please see below for more information.
As many of you are aware, Governor McDonnell has asked the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) to review Virginia’s policies and regulations on dangerous and exotic animals. DGIF and other state agencies that are involved in animal regulation have asked the Institute for Environmental Negotiation at the University of Virginia to help facilitate a process for engaging multiple, diverse stakeholders in this effort.
A Workgroup is being formed to develop consensus-based recommendations around public safety and potentially dangerous animals in Virginia. The Workgroup will be comprised of a wide variety of stakeholders consisting of pet industry groups, business owners, local government organizations, state agency representatives, federal agency representatives, zoos, animal care and welfare groups, nonprofit organizations, and others. Several meetings will be held from September – November of 2012. Although a limited number of people will serve on the Workgroup, meetings will be open to the public. We will send the meeting schedule and additional information out as it is finalized. There will be several additional ways to participate in this effort, including public meetings, a survey, and a presentation next week.
A Webinar will be held with state agency representatives next Wed., August 29th outlining the effort and focusing on existing federal, state, and locality regulations and animal care standards in Virginia (see below for more information). We invite all of you to join the Webinar as well as to submit your questions about existing regulations in advance of the Webinar to animals@virginia.edu by Monday, August 27th at 5pm. Additional questions may be sent after that point and during the Webinar, and will be answered as time permits during the presentation.
The Dangerous Animals Background information Webinar will be held on Wed., August 29th from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. It can be viewed online at this link: http://128.143.138.238/launch/rtsp_a...d_graphics.qtl. If you are not able to join the Webinar, it will be recorded and able to be viewed after the presentation on a website. We will send the website link out next week, as well as information about a follow up survey.
If you would like to continue to receive these updates, you do not need to do anything further to stay on this list. If you would prefer not to receive these updates, you can opt out by clicking "UNSUBSCRIBE" at the bottom of this email.
If you know of anyone else who should be included on this notification list, you can forward them the message using the "FORWARD" link below, or you can invite them to send us an email at animals@virginia.edu to subscribe.
Over the next few months there will be several opportunities to engage with this process, hear different perspectives, and share information. We will use this notification list to announce all of these opportunities. We will send another email in the near future with additional ways to stay engaged in the process. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact us at animals@virginia.edu.
