I've been thinking of adding some Vipera berus to my collection just because they seem rather nifty and im a fan of smaller snakes. But after looking around the internet and talking to some people I've yet to find any info on how much they are worth and who (If anyone) sells them, or anything from any American for that matter. So I guess my question is, is it legal own one in the US (state laws aside)?

Yes, they are legal. Its just that not many people keep them these days. When you do see them they are usually kinda pricey for my taste considering I prefer arboreals. I'm actually getting rid of a trio of unrelated adult v. xanthina to a buddy. Dont feel like messing with them. Good luck in locating them. Would love to see pics.

Ha dang. If they're expensive compared to aboreals I will most likely never get one. The cheapest aboreal Ive ever seen is the purps and theyre still $125. If your buddy ever decides against those xanthinas I would be willing to do some trading or just purchasing for them.
But thanks for the reply

As long as they are CB you can own them. They are indigenous here in the UK and I usually find a few each year, numbers are dropping here. Quick little things when they want to be!

Yea, Ive been told that they must be CB but Im not too sure if that applies in the US. But either way if they are over $100 US im not even going to worry about it. Id rather just go with some sistrurus
Thanks

They are seemingly very rare this side of the pond.
None are listed in accredited zoos in North America, and they are very few and far between in private collections. That much being said I worked alongside someone who had very good success with them years ago, but he had a "European thumb"..
When they are available- at least recently I have heard they are very cheap- at least this side of the border. They lack the "cool" factor most privates crave, so price is not the issue- availability is.
Of course, when purchasing any venomous snake, it goes without saying to have a bite protocol. Experienced snakebite physicians, antivenin and epinephrine should be at the center of this.
Best of luck.
