One Summer, my neighbor found a garter snake on her patio, with 2/3 of its body standing straight up off the ground. Its head was parallel to the ground and its neck bent sharply downward, like a cane, as if trying to lift as much of its body off the ground as possible without tilting its snout. The snake seemed hypnotized. A bunch of people walked up to it and waved their hands all round it, but it did not respond. It didn't even flick its tongue, but you could see it breathing at a relaxed rate. Its colors were bright, eyes were clear and the snake looked healthy. No signs of shedding or stress. Eventually we all went inside, but it stayed in its pose the whole time we were at the neighbors. The next day the snake was gone. What could have made it act that way?

Just taking a guess without seeing it. Garters love to eat earth worms. It could have eaten a worm that had some chemical from a landscaping company on ot and that caused some sort of a neurological problem. It either wore off which is unlikely, or fell prey to a bird, cat, or racccoon that night. ????
