Can you Return Snakes to the Wild ? I currently have a massive A. Squamigera breeding project set up. I already produces a lot of snakes this year. I would actually find it ideal to send some back to Africa to be returned to the wild to make up for the ones that were taken out for me to have my snakes. Does anyone know if this is even remotely possible ? I was thinking about contacting a zoo out there to see if they would want to take some snakes to return to the wild but I was wondering if this had ever been done before.

Good topic. Any idea what the laws are in this country concerning the same? I think most "scientists" would let a species go extinct before they would ever consider using private collector to reestablish populations. Gaboon's in Africa and EDBs in the southeast US are experiencing drastically shrinking populations and you know there are too many people breeding these for either to ever go extinct.

Exactly, the key is finding a pathway for private breeders to be able to give back to the environment. The zoos can never achieve this because they don't have the resources to focus on a particular species. In the private pet industry focusing on a particular species is actually profitable. This is why I am really interested in finding a way to either work with zoos or other private agencies and breeders to re-establish some populations.

It would not be advisable do to possible transmisson of illness to wild population. And getting any third world country to extend funding for such a program would be a real task. Then for all you know the snakes you send over there may be resold or maybe even killed. Best bet is private captive breeding in moderation.

Yea I was considering all those things although the illnesses I think we can screen for. I was more or less interested in working with a zoo out there (if they even have zoos out there).

Unfortunatly most zoos put them selves above the private sector. As far as screening for illness, the stress of shipping these snakes could onset illness. The safest way to do this is for there local zoos to go out and collect wild caught snakes isolate them ,and then start a captive breeding programs. By this they can cut out the international connection ,reduce the chance of stress. By takeing wild caught snakes and produceing offssprings holding on to these young tell they put on some size they could increase the servival rate.It is a much better ideal to set up your own breeding group. In the long run it will be much more benificial.

I agree with all of those things the only problem is most zoo's can't possibly help all of the animals that need help. They probably couldn't even help a single group of animals such as "frogs" so I don't know why the wave their noises at us we could probably help a lot more animals if we work together.

Been down this road before.Alot ofthe zoos are about as political as our goverment, some have respect for the private sector, but most distance them selves. You may have good intent, but dont get your hopes up.
