I live in TN. and have to get some antivenom to get my class 1 permit. All I can find is CroFab.
CroFab costs $1,000 per vial - I need six!!! (I miss Florida!) Anyway, does anyone know where I can get some cheaper antivenom? HELP!!!

Disclaimer: First of all please understand that I am only listing a couple of possibilities, which may be somewhat unreliable and that I would personally not persue. This may be bad advice and bad suggestion, but they are possible suggestions. You are responsible for your own actions and I am in no way responsible if you get tagged and suffer subsequent injury. What I have to say here in no way reflects the opinions or policies of the SHHS or any other organization.
CroFab is bloody expensive. If you need Crotalid antivenom then you might consider a Mexican or Brazilian made antivenom, as those countries have heavy Crotalid populations. Those antivenoms would be considerably cheaper, but you do have to go through the hassle of getting the importation permits and the IND liscense. I am not recomending that you do this. If you do and you are injured, I must stress that it is your own fault.
When Wyeth was making antivenom, they made a product for non-human use which only cost a couple of hundred dollars per vial. The funny thing is, according to my sources, this stuff was identical to human antivenom in every way except the price tag. Pity it's all probably expired by now.
You know, a lot of exotic antivenoms are a heluva lot less expensive than that for our native species. Just one more advantage to keeping exotics.
Cheers,
Roger

Just check with your local hospital and see what they stock. If they have either Wyeth or CroFab, there's no reason for you to stock it. The way the law works on the exotic antivenoms that aren't FDA approved is that it is okay for a doctor to give them as long as there isn't already an FDA approved treatment, which there is - CroFab. Therefore, it is a waste of time to purchase antivenom from Mexico or Brazil right now. You wouldn't find a doctor willing to administer it. And if a friend or spouse administered it, and something went wrong, they would go to jail for practicing medicine without a license, and manslaughter if you were to die.
