Hi, I am writing a novel and I need to know if it would be reasonably easy to buy a black mamba in the U.S. Obviously this is fiction and there's a bit of "wiggle room" when it comes to facts, but I wouldn't want to include something that a knowledgeable person would find laughable.
If a mamba would not be available, might there be another snake that could take its place? Rattlers, copperheads, etc. won't work. There can be virtually no chance of recovery, and, ideally, the victim would be dead within a few hours -- minutes would be better.
By the way, the person wanting the mamba is reasonably competent in handling snakes (her daddy was a snake handler in an Appalachian Pentecostal church). And, no, she is not entirely sane. But she does love her little Teddy, and the kids who bully him at school have no idea what they are up against.
Thanks in advance.
