Hello, I was wondering if anybody had more information on the intricacies of California's hot snake laws. I am aware that you may only possess venomous snakes native to California without a permit. I have also read that it is illegal to buy or sell native wildlife in the state of California unless it is albino. I just moved to California and I am ready to get back into keeping hots. (I moved from Pennsylvania, where you can pretty much have anything you want) My main questions are if I buy lets say a normal Mojave rattlesnake from a breeder in another state and have it shipped to me, is that breaking the law? Also is there a permit that I can get to own other hots? If so where do I go to get it? I live in the Bay area and I would rather not have to collect wild specimens, I would rather get captive bred just for health reasons. Thank you for answering my super long question, I just don't want to do anything that would get me in trouble or give the rest of us a bad name.

This may or may not be accurate, as it states that the last update was in 2008. But the contact info should still be good. Hope it helps, Marty

You also may want to see if there are any herp societies/clubs in the area that would know the info your looking for. I'm pretty sure there are some in CA. Take care, Marty

I was speaking to a friend of mine in California not too long ago. I understand that there is a limit of 2 native venomous snakes that's allowed without a permit.
However, albinos and other similar morphs (apparently the law specifically says red eyes or something along those lines) do not count towards the limit of 2. Having said that, a melanistic morph would count since it doesn't have red eyes.
Try contacting Dan Grubb, he breeds Crotalus atrox in California so he should be able to tell you in more detail @ http://www.dgreptiles.com

Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate all of your advise and contact info. I really just want to be responsible and do this right. No need for me to be on the news for breaking a law I didn't know existed and giving the rest of you guys a bad name. I've seen it happen too many times before.
