Hello all, I have been keeping & breeding colubrids & boids for 10 years now but I have always been facinated by hots. I feel I am ready to keep hots but before I get anything I need more information, so any good books or web-resources would be greatly appreciated.
Plus if there are any hot keepers in the area of London Ontario let me know if you would be willing to have an apprentice.
Thanks for your time Darryl N

According to a recently published paper, you may well have ekpt a number of hots, albeit unwhittingly. THat aside, I don't really know of any books that deal with venomous snake husbandry. I do know that there was a Reptiles Mag article a year or so ago and the SHHS newsletter does have features on the care of individual snakes. Really, a lot of hot snake keeping isn't all that different from other aspects of snake keeping, a bite is just more serious. Using common sense and doing everything that you can to minimize the risk of getting taged is what it's all about. My recomendation is to look at what interests you and start small. My interest is Elapidae so I started with piddly little Aspidelaps--not so piddly according to the aforementioned paper.
I see that you like Bitis, well, first LOCATE AFRICAN POLYVALENT ANTIVENOM. I know that Ontario used to have an antivenom bank. That bank would also help you find someone locally who might be willing to help you out on the training.
