I see a lot of bitis gabonica, nasicornis, and arietans online and at shows. However, I don't see a lot of other nice bitis species like cornuta and parviocula around to often. Does any one on this site work with these species or know any one who does. I am really interested in acquiring a cornuta.

Get in touch with Al Coritz (Phobos here, viperkeeper on youtube and Albert Coritz on FB). He keeps Bitis that most of us have never seen (and some I'd never seen pictures of until his). I've been out of the loop for a while, so I'm not sure what he's up to these days...

Oops.. I forgot to mention that I think Al is still in the hospital (just had back surgery). That much I do know (from his FB posts), but he seems to have access to a computer...

Keep in mind if you contact Al.....He is a busy guy and will not write you an essay on keeping lesser known Bitis. You can find information on his Youtube channel about parviocula and caudalis for sure, maybe even cornuta. Do some homework first before you contact him.

I am not to worried about keeping them I already did some research and they seem like a pretty straight forward species to keep. I am more interested in finding a breeder. Is Al The only one you guys know of off hand ? I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket. I seen a video he made in 2007 but I doubt any of those snakes would still be available. I found someone in South Africa who has a couple but its really not cost effective to go that route.

Two things:
1) Yes, I'm afraid Al is the only one I, personally, know of who keeps those, but I don't really know that many keepers.
2) I don't mean to be an A-hole, but the fact that you say you're not worried about keeping them concerns me a bit, especially if your profile on this site is even close to accurate. You are correct that their CARE is straight-forward, but the danger is at a whole different level than Atheris. Check out the following link from my site, and then read the threat titled "should I get a gaboon viper" a few down the list from this one. That guy is talking about his FIRST hot snake, so you're ahead of the game there, but much of the same advice still applies.

Dwarf Bitis really do seem very rare in the States. While I plead inexperience with them, I believe, as I am sure you already know, Americans hasn't had much publicized success with breeding them. Most CB specimens I see are from Africa or Europe.
I've found that the venomland forum has a lot of keepers, therefore good information on there. If you aren't already a member. I do apologize if promoting another website isn't allowed.

Not importing much anymore or breeding certain species. too expensive and posople don't want to pay what it really costs.
The Dwarf species have this bad tendency to eate the male after breeding and yield one to three babies per litter. They almost always die since they are specialized feeders. Not worth the time & expense.
As far as other species, far less people are exporting and the cost of importing have tripled in price. People still expect to buy Boomslangs at $50 a head when the landed cost is $175, that's without any mark up. People laugh when I tell the $200 each. Not worth the time and expense.
Face it folks that hobby is pretty much dead, with all the states moving towards bans and the Fed's stopping importation. You train has left the Station.

I have experience with bitis, elapids, and many other vipers. My experience doesn't end with Atheris. Thanks for your concern.

I believe someone posted parviocula on the classifieds here and fauna.. Think they wanted $4k for a pair of 2013 and $8k for a pair of 2012.
Very cool looking snakes, I got to see them in person when Al had one on display at hamburg
