I was bitten on my middle finger in May of this yr. I live in the Appalachians, NoVA. Don't know how old or big the snake was....not tiny...but I am sure it was a copperhead. I swelled all the way up to my shoulder within 2 hrs and was given 6 vials of crofab (sp?) in 2 lots. It is now 2 weeks post bite and I have little use of my middle finger, my wrist is sore, as if broken, and it seems that there is "bone" pain in my lower arm (radius)as if swelling of soft tissue is putting pressure on it. It, of course, is my right (dominant) hand and it is next to impossible to rest it...not w/3 young kids to care for!
So, can anyone tell me if there are usually long term/permanent affects from snake bites?
Thank-you!

I was bitten 4 years ago by a baby southern copperhead one of mine. I waited till it went up my arm and that took 9 hours. When it went in to my lymph nodes I went to the Hospital and of course it was to late for anti venom. I spent 7 days in intensive care till the swelling went down and to make sure I wasn’t going to loose my finger. Today I have no pain in any joints the only thing is two inches to the tip on my finger has nerve damage.

Please refer to my post about the long term effects of snakebite survey being conducted by the Florida Snakebite Institute and the Kentucky Reptile Zoo.

We have already noted some long term effects from snakebites including local nerve damage or a condition known as complex regional Neuropathy caused by damage to the nerves by the venom. We have also seen local bone damage or fusing of small bones caused by the venom. I would recommend follow-up your physician for an x-ray of the wrist to rule out this fusing. Again please refer to my post regarding our survey.
