I've been interested in field herping for a while now and tonight had the most interesting find. While road cruising near Athens, GA in the rain I found 3 copperheads. I am near the University here so there is a lot of people around and a three snake night is good for me. My question had to do with the size of the third snake I found. I only found it because it was laying next to the road by a smaller individual who was right on the road. By laying the large snake next to my hook and later measuring the hook I can say with certainty that the snake was 40" long or more. How old would this snake likely be? It dwarfed every other copper I've found in the region(it was as thick as the large Crotalus horridus atricaudatus we find around here). Also it looked red (like a typical A. c. mokasen) when all the other coppers around here that I've found appear tan (ala A. c. contortrix). Any insight would be great As soon is I develop and scan pictures they will be sent to this site.

The copperhead you saw would atleast be around 7-10 years old or older to be that size. Also the males look more like northern copperheads while females look more like southerns most of the time but there are exceptions. hope this helps.

That's a big copperhead. I'll bring a similar sized one with me to the Wildlife Soc. meeting on Oct. 1st.
