This really depends on what interests you. As ym primary interest are old world elapids, my first hots were a nice pair of Aspidelaps scutatus.
Give us an idea of where your interests are and suggestions may be a bit more forthecoming. Of course, as this is a topic that comes up frequently, you might check out the forum archives and see what's been said before.

Copperheads are good first hots. So are wagler's temple pit vipers but their husbandry can be a bit tricky at times.
