95% of the timbers were back at the dens by the third week of October . Due to a wet cool year many partum females had to head back to dens early and had late births at dens rather than at the rookeries where birthing would have taken place if the summer was warmer and drier. Also many aborded their offspring this year do to the wet cool weather. Butt it was an exceptionally larg year for gravid horridus, not to see another until 2006. Some snakes are still out at the dens. You can find a few of them basking especially 2500 feet or below elevation densights, Anything higher than 3000 is most likley down for the year. In NC we still have lots of snakes out in the piedmont and coastal plain but they aren't far from their hibernation spots either.
Hope this helps
